European Studbook Foundation

In 1992, the Dutch Turtle Society took the
initiative to start studbook/breeding programs for tortoises and
turtles. They became aware of the importance of protecting the animals
in the wild and of a more stringent policy concerning the import of
animals from the wild.
Soon after
that the same initiative was taken for lizards, snakes and some species
of poison arrow frogs. This led within five years to a total number of
more than a 100 studbook programs for species and subspecies of reptiles
and amphibians with a total of 2500 registered animals. It was decided
that there should be a foundation for the studbooks, which led to the
creation of the ESF, the European Studbook Foundation. At the website of
the ESF,
www.studbooks.org, you can find more
information.
In 2005 we
started with the first studbooks for newts and salamanders. These
studbooks concern species from the genus Tylototriton.
The main
objective of these studbooks is to improve the breeding results with
these animals. We are doing this by stimulating the exchange of
information between the keepers and by creating breeding groups.
If you want to
join the studbook and participate in the conservation of these animals
